I was, a few months ago, at an Art meet up, here, young and not so young artists, were exposing their creations in different form ...on one table there was a typewritter ...a 20 year old girl was taking pictures of it, then she she turned and asked me : What is that ? (pointing to the typewriter)...well I was astonished ! I guess really a lot has happen since I was born...and I' m not that old :)!

Stavo ad un evento d' un paio di mesi fa', dove vari artistui giovani e non cosi' giovani esibivano la loro arte in diverse maniere. Su un tavolo c' era una macchina da scrivere, una ragazza sui 20anni mentre faceva delle foto a questo oggetto mi chiede : scusa ma che cos' e' questa cosa?..indicando la macchina da scrivere! ero cosi meravigliata .Cosi' mi resi conto che si, ne sono successe di cose da quando sono nata e non sono cosi' vecchia !!

SCRIVERE A MANO SVILUPPA LE CAPACITA' DEL BAMBINO ...

Un tempo si piangeva la capacità di fare le operazioni a mente: tutta colpa delle calcolatrici. Ora è l'abilità di scrivere a mano che perde terreno a favore delle tastiere, soprattutto nell'età della scuola. Computer o telefonini che siano, i caratteri sempre più spesso vengono
digitati su uno schermo anziché essere disegnati in tutte le loro bambinesche rotondità.
I primi allarmi fra i pedagogisti risalgono agli anni '90. E anche se è francamente fuori luogo parlare di invasione dei computer nelle scuole italiane, dell'orizzonte dell'estinzione della scrittura a mano nei paesi anglosassoni si parla da anni.
"Un testo scritto a mano contiene una riflessione. Un testo scritto al computer o con il telefonino, il più delle volte, assolve alla funzione di trasmettere un messaggio" sostiene Franco Frabboni, che insegna alla facoltà di Scienze della formazione dell'università di Bologna. Le sue conclusioni coincidono con gli studi che Steve Graham, professore alla Vanderbilt University negli Stati Uniti, conduce da anni sui bambini delle elementari.

L'anno scorso ha preso un gruppo di scolari di sei anni, in grado di tracciare a mano solo una dozzina di lettere al minuto e gli ha consigliato di seguire un programma speciale, con un quarto d'ora al giorno di esercizi per tre volte alla settimana. Dopo nove settimane, non solo i bambini erano diventati molto più rapidi, ma avevano anche imparato a comporre strutture sintattiche molto più articolate rispetto ai coetanei.
"Oggi siamo abituati a considerare la scrittura a mano come una perdita di tempo" sottolinea Frabboni. "La tastiera è più rapida ed efficace, impossibile negarlo. Ma inconsapevolmente trascina la nostra scrittura verso una forma più sciatta e banale di espressione. La soluzione migliore per la scuola italiana sarebbe il banco a due piazze: da una parte carta e penna, dall'altra il computer".
Negli Stati Uniti negli anni '60, la ditta Zaner-Bloser specializzata in strumenti per l'apprendimento della calligrafia raccomandava 45 minuti di esercizio al giorno. Oggi anche i suoi insegnanti si sono adeguati ai tempi, riducendo la pratica quotidiana a 10 minuti. Neanche da trascurare è la lamentela degli storici, abituati a interpretare i manoscritti. Una società incapace di scrivere a mano sarà ugualmente handicappata nell'interpretare la calligrafia altrui, e quindi nel leggere i documenti originali del passato.
Un altro motivo per cui Frabboni e gli altri pedagogisti suggeriscono di esercitarsi sia con la penna che con la tastiera è che le due attività coinvolgono aree diverse del cervello, tutte importanti. Per scrivere a mano il cervello fa ricorso a quella memoria procedurale che viene appresa una volta per non essere mai più persa nella vita. Come andare in bicicletta o allacciarsi le scarpe, queste attività non possono essere insegnate a parole, ma solo tramite imitazione e esercizio. Una volta apprese, vengono conservate in serbatoi della memoria particolarmente solidi, che le rendono inossidabili anche dopo anni di mancanza di esercizio.
"L'Italia è un paese spaccato in due, per quanto riguarda l'uso dei computer fra i bambini" continua Frabboni. "Nelle scuole del sud si fa ancora molto affidamento alla scrittura a mano, mentre nel centro-nord comincia a diffondersi in maniera importante l'uso dei computer. Non ho nulla in contrario, ma lo considero uno dei tanti segnali della perdita di corporeità dei nostri ragazzi. Vita sedentaria, isolamento, perdita della manualità, riduzione della capacità di introspezione e riflessione. I remember reading an issue of Family Fun Magazine in which behavior specialist Jan Faull asks, “How will the child learn respect if you don’t teach it, expect it and model it yourself?” “I am teaching respect but I can’t get any respect!” a mam says Upon digging deeper, she told me that she found herself screaming at her children when they did not do as
she asked. After much discussion and parenting coaching technique, the mother came to realize that by screaming, she was teaching the very thing she hated; disrespect !
Children will take their cues from you. Simply put, if children are around respectful adults, they’re more likely to show respect, however, when they’re around disrespectful adults, they’re more likely to show disrespectful behavior. Yelling, cursing, grabbing, shouting over, and sarcasm are transferable! “Young ones will eventually express themselves as you do, but realize it takes years of effective teaching to refine those skills” Family Fun Magazine writer, Faull, wrote. This is accurate when on both the positive side and the negative side. When you speak with respect to your children, they learn respect. When you speak with disrespect, they learn that just as well.

10 Parenting Tips for Teaching Respect and Curbing Disrespect:

(1) Model it: If you want them to do it, you have to do it too.

(2) Expect it: When your expectations are reasonably high, children rise to the occasion.

(3) Teach it: Give children the tools they need to show you respect. Your Powerful Words Family School, can assist you with the lessons.

(4) Praise it: When you see or hear your children using respectful language and making respectful choices, recognize it and praise them for making positive, respectful decisions.

(8) Understand it: Your children are growing and learning. Sometimes word choice and behavioral decisions are made because they do not have the correct words or behavior to relay “I’m tired,” “I’m frustrated,” or “I’m angry.”

(9) Reinforce it: Remind children of their good decisions so that they remember how it felt, the praise they received, and the overall experience of being respectful.

(10) Reward it: Respectful behavior should be something that children want to do without overindulgent rewards. However, it is good to associate respectful behavior with intangible rewards such as praise, recognition, extra responsibility, and privileges.

Teaching respect takes patience, time, and a willingness to do as you preach. Time isn’t everything though, is it? It takes years to rear a respectful child and only moments to fill one with anger and disrespect. Which one do you choose?

Neuroscientists show why children excel at learning languages from Helen Doron
Scientists may finally have an explanation for why children reign supreme when it comes to learning new languages. Using MRI and animation technology to study the brains of children, researchers have discovered that children are processing language information in a different region of the brain than adults.

Different areas in the brain control different functions of our body and cognitive abilities. Automatic brain functions, things we do almost without thinking, come from the part of the brain referred to as the “deep motor area”. When children acquire language, this same part of the brain, is what they use, so the language is acquired by a deeper more fundamental part of the brain and the new language quickly becomes second nature. But when adults learn a second or third language, their brains operate differently. The window of opportunity to imprint information and skills in the deep motor region of the brain is widest during early childhood (optimally up to 7 years old) and is nearly shut by the time we reach about 18. Therefore, adults have to store information elsewhere, in a more active brain region. As a consequence, adults usually think sentences through in a native tongue and then translate them word-by-word, instead of thinking in automatically in another language like a child would. Even for people with extensive training in a second language as an adult, who feel their speech is automatic, on a neurological level the brain is still operating differently from a child's.
Research into the neurology of language acquisition is proving that early foreign language instruction with children under the age of 7 is also highly beneficial.

But what about even younger brains like with babies and infants, before they learn their own mother tongue? Researchers say that simply teaching young children the sounds and accents of other languages at an earlier age may be valuable, even if they are not getting full instruction in the language, because they become familiar with the sounds. Learning those sounds later in life – from a neurological perspective – can be more difficult. Dopo una vacanza di pochi giorni in Francia, mio figlio, all’epoca 4 anni, entrò a casa e salutò la tata con un teatrale “Bonjour!”: la cosa mi colpì molto, dato che nessuno si era premurato del fatto che lui assorbisse la lingua del posto in cui eravamo, e che l’unica ad interloquire in francese era la sottoscritta.

Ormai fa parte della sensibilità comune la percezione secondo la quale i bambini imparano le lingue molto velocemente. Pochi sono invece coloro che conoscono i motivi per cui questo accade, la stragrande maggioranza pensa che si tratti semplicemente di una maggiore capacità di “imitazione”.

In realtà, il meccanismo che scatta nei bambini è un po’ differente dall’imitazione. Infatti gli scienziati che studiano i modi in cui il nostro cervello agisce hanno scoperto che un bambino, quando impara una lingua, utilizza un’area del cervello indicata come area del movimento, ossia l’area che presiede a tutti quei movimenti che compiamo senza pensarci. Acquisire una lingua in questo modo implica il fatto che la lingua diventi uno strumento che utilizziamo senza pensarci su.

Ancora secondo gli studi dei neurologi, i bambini fino a 7 anni utilizzano esclusivamente quest’area del cervello, per imparare, mentre dai 18 anni in poi la struttura cerebrale inizia ad apprendere in tutt’altro modo. E’ per questo stesso motivo che, se impariamo una lingua da adulti, tendiamo sempre a tradurre dalla nostra lingua d’origine.
